This is slightly edited transcript of a talk given by Jim Meissner at the Quest Book Store on 06-06-2000.
Jim: I am Jim Meissner. Kay said she would help me with questions if I get stuck. I am not used to public speaking at all, so this is very strange for me. I can talk for hours, talking one on one, but a whole group like this I get nervous. Anyway, to start with, the reason why the synchronizer was developed is one of the main questions people ask, and my background is an electrical engineer and I was a tennis player. I was a very poor tennis player. I was the worst tennis player in my group, and nothing I did made a difference. I went to tennis camp, I took lessons, I hit the ball every day. Nothing helped get me above the beginner levels. So to make a very long story short, I got a patent on a tennis racket, I got a patent on sports training glasses that synchronize the left and right hemispheres visually, which helps you see the ball in three dimensions. And that helps tremendously if you can see the ball with both eyes instead of one eye, it makes a big difference. But still people were hitting the ball much too hard for me, would go right by me, and hit the back curtain before I had a chance to get my racket near it. So I did a lot of research. I am skipping over this quickly. If anyone wants to know more details exactly why, and how, let me know. I started researching the Hemi-Sync process the Monroe Institute has developed, because I ran into a friend who said "You need to be in the Alpha state when you play tennis". So I said "OK, I'll try that". So when I got a tape and played in the Alpha state and I played OK, but I didn't play well. So then he said "Well, maybe you should be in the Theta state". And I said "What's Theta?" This was the process of learning what these things were. But when I was in the Theta state I was asleep out there, and I couldn't hit any balls. So a couple of these points kind of gave me a direction as to where to look. I wanted to get higher than Alpha which is in the Beta range. And there is nothing on the market that I found, or any research of how to get into the Beta state. Everyone wants to get into meditation states, everyone wants to go lower, and slow brain states. And there is nothing on the market that gets you faster. So, in researching the Monroe Institute technology and actually trying to prove to my friend that it doesn't work, I found it does work quite well. And I learned a whole bunch more because I was seriously researching it. And in the process I developed the synchronizer which we are talking about here. And with the help of the Synchronizer, what you can do is make the tennis ball go in absolute slow motion. You casually walk out there, wait for it to arrive, and hit it. It's still going 90 miles per hour but to your perception it is now going absolutely slow. So what has happened is the speed of the tennis ball hasn't changed but your brain state has increased to a much faster rate so it's taking more samples per second. So that made the tennis game extremely easy. I got first place trophy in my group, I moved up higher, I became a tennis instructor and I taught tennis for 10 years, and I am a certified tennis pro now. (laughter) I'll tell you, I spent 10 years trying to make this transition from beginner level and nothing else I tried helped. So this is the beginning of the synchronizer, it's from my tennis game.
In researching it, we also found that it helps kids that are learning disabled, kids that are slow learners, people who are he autistic type of kids. It speeds them up and they get straight A's in school. So there is a very large market for speeding up the brain. Then I found out if you play the same type of program in reverse you can slow down the brain and actually put it to sleep. There are three modes of that type. There is the Up Mode which speeds up the brain, there is the Down Mode which slows the brain down, and the Sleep Mode which is the same thing except it's a very specific frequency - time profile that gets you into deep delta sleep, which is very important for health. Then the other Mode is the Hemi-Sync type of program, except we don't call it Hemi-Sync, it is a sweeping binaural beat which is quite different from anything that I know of on the market. It sweeps through all the frequencies, different programs between program 50 and 60. You start off with a very slow frequency difference, the Alpha stage, and then if you go faster you go through Beta and then you go through Gamma, you go through some very, very high states. And some of the very high frequencies appear to affect the chakras and all these kind of things which I don't know too much about. My background is electrical engineering and if anybody here has right brain questions, or New Age questions, I brought Evelynn my friend to help me with that. And Mary over here who has been using it for her healing touch practice and has had some interesting feedback. I brought them as a support group here because some of these questions I won't be able to answer even though I designed the machine for a different reason. It turns out that it does so much more than I ever expected. I mean, almost daily we find new uses for it which I never would have believed possible much less actually doing it. So l0 years ago when I designed the machine I was a very brilliant electrical engineer and now when you ask me I'd say the material must have been channeled. So I have come a long way.
I'd like to take a moment and demonstrate some of these programs to you. This is the Up Mode, Program 01. This is the slowest mode. You have to ignore the radio station in there. When I came here, (there is a big radio station right across the street) my CD player wouldn't work. The synchronizer had all the radio station sounds in it. I had to drive home and get my bigger CD player, and I had to built a filter here to go between the Synchronizer and the rest of it to get rid of that radio station. There is still a little bit in there, well anyway, it's better than it was.
So anyway what you are listening to here is set of pulses, that move from right to left, there is a phase modulation, there is an amplitude modulation, and what you don't hear is the frequency changing extremely, extremely slowly. Over a period of about 5 minutes or so the frequency will have doubled, but hopefully you did not notice in the meantime that it has changed frequency. At the end of the program, you'll feel as if you had 10 cups of coffee, you are going to be all nervous and jittery, and it will have driven you up into higher states without your really recognizing it.
Guest: So is this the one that you used for playing tennis?
Jim: Yes, that's correct, yes. Actually this one gets you started. This is starting at alpha frequencies, 10 hertz, moved up to 20 hertz. And then there are other programs which go faster. Once I learned how to do -- And this is a learning process, this is really a teaching tool, this is not black magic, it takes time, it takes maybe weeks of working with it, just like you would be lifting weights. It takes time to build the brain up to a higher state. And, let me spend a moment on that, because let me explain that. This is very similar to weight lifting. Now people say how could this work, how could this affect your brain. My left arm is not as strong as my right arm. Nothing wrong with my left arm. I just don't use it as much. So how would you get the left arm to become stronger? The "New Age" people say, well, just set your intentions and it will be stronger by morning. That's not where I come from. I come from the engineer viewpoint and you have to work for it. The only way I know to make it stronger is to start working with dumb bells. Well anyway, one of the ways I am going to make this left arm muscle stronger is to take a 10 pound dumb bell and do 10 reps every other day. When that becomes too easy, you go to 20 pounds and then you go to 30 pounds, and 40 pounds, and pretty soon 50 pounds is simple as pie. But it takes weeks of working with this muscle to make it stronger. Now if you had told me that lifting weights would make my arm stronger, I would not have believed you, unless I had seen evidence of having worked with weights, having seen people with big muscles, and how they got that way. Intuitively I would not believe that lifting weights and doing something strenuous would do anything useful. It would hurt your arm, make you tired, and can't possible do anything. But we know from experience, that we have seen it and we have heard about it, that lifting weights helps make muscles stronger, somehow. I don't know how it works, I don't know what is in there. I have the same theory that I can make the muscle between the two ears stronger with the proper training tool. It doesn't get stronger by itself, it doesn't get stronger by wishful thinking, doesn't get stronger by intention, positive thinking, and all of those things. I think it gets stronger if you work it. But you have to work it with the proper weight. If you start with a 50 pound weight on the arm you are going to rip the muscles, hurt yourself, and it's not going to do any training effect. You have to go through the 10 pound weight first, then 20 pounds. You have to go through sequences, and as you get stronger, then you take the higher programs. There are 5 different programs on this machine that are all the same Up Mode, but they are stronger weights, you could say. So as you go into higher frequencies, it works the brain harder, the repetition rate goes up, and it really, really works hard, and if you go too fast you will get very tired and fall asleep. So it is something you spend time with and slowly work up to it.
So anyway, let me demonstrate the other programs. Program One. Program Two, this is twice as fast. Program Three... this is the program that once I learned how to handle this kind of speed, my tennis game improved significantly. This goes relatively fast and it takes probably a couple of weeks of training before you can follow this as though it is going slowly. Here is Four. Here is Five. Some people claim they can follow this easily. Unbelievable, I don't believe them. That's going much to fast.
Anyway, the Down Mode........
Ed Pearson: What do you mean "follow" it easily?
Jim: Good question, yes. Let me play that again. This program, (playing Mode 05) you can hear it going zipity zip back and forth, right? Can you hear each individual pulse? Let me go back to the first one. The first one you can hear each individual pulse (playing Mode 01). You can follow it, you can point your finger at it, and if there were three people in the room pointing fingers, they would agree. The other one just goes swish, swish, swish, swish, swish, and goes much too fast to really entrain your brain. What we are working with here, by the way, is the sympathetic nervous system. In other words what we are engaging the mind with is the fight - flight response, the sympathetic nervous system. It is the auditory system that keeps track of your environment. It keeps the bear from chasing you or someone sneaking up on you from behind, it helps you find where game is that you are looking for, helps you from becoming the game, and the mind keeps track of all the sounds around you. It is very, very accurate, very, very sensitive. So if something loud happens, if a fire cracker went off in that corner over there, everyone in the room would be forced to look there. You have no choice but to look at the very intense sound, because you have to define whether that is dangerous, whether you have to fight it, or whether you have to run because the building is collapsing, or something. So this is the part of the brain that I play with, I toy with, I give it these signals, there is one here, there is one here, and every time there is one of these signals the brain has to try to determine where it came from. It has to calculate where in space the sound originated from . And how the brain does it mainly is the time delay between the right and left ear. If the sound arrives to the right ear before the left ear, it has to be from over there on the left. It actually calculates the time difference very, very precisely. It is amazing that the brain can do that. But the time difference is the vector of what angle the sound is coming from. The volume, how loud it is, if it is louder in the right ear, it has to be over there someplace on the right. It uses two cues, the brain uses two cues to determine where the sound is coming from. Time delay, or time difference, and amplitude. So, what I am doing is, with a computer program, I am generating an artificial program, mental weight lifting, I am forcing it to keep on identifying these sounds. And it has to do it. There is no way the brain can ignore these high intensity sounds. It is absolutely something that is primitive, the fight - flight response, it has no choice but to follow that. If you try to ignore it, it works even better. It's much more effective if you try to ignore it.
Ed Pearson: Another question, are you saying that as one's brain becomes exercised, that the sound that you hear, when your brain has become accustomed to this at the 3rd or 4th or 5th level that the sensation would be the same as what we are now hearing at the 1st level?
Jim: The sound would appear to be coming much slower. Like the tennis ball appears to be going in slow motion once you have learned the process. But it is not really "accustoming", that is not really the right word I would use. I would say that what we are dealing with here is, you are making the muscles stronger, you are training the mind to process data more easily and faster. In other words what happens in the muscle that makes it stronger? I really don't know. Nutrition? More blood, training? With the muscle between the two ears, there are effects that we can measure. We have done testing in the hospital where we can measure the Oxygen consumption going up, as you listen to these programs, you can see the respiration rate going very, very high, 20 to 30 breaths per minute versus normal, which is 12 breaths per minute. You will see the CO2 exhaust going sky high when you are listening to this program. And you will see the respiration volume, liters per minute, going sky high. The brain, when it does work, uses glucose and oxygen as a fuel. The waste product is CO2 and water. So by analyzing the gasses you can see that this "muscle between the ears" is working at a hyper rate. And it is not at all getting accustomed to it, rather it comes to a point where brain can handle the load better. You can actually process the data at a higher rate.
Guest Ed Pearson: Oh, well, let me ask the question another way. It's very good information, but it really hasn't gotten to what I'm asking. Let's assume just for the sake of discussion, that the first level is a waltz level, and the third level is a fox trot, and the fifth level is a polka, or some faster dance. Now, as the training takes place would I be hearing level three as a waltz at any point or would there still be that distinction, would the waltz slow down or the polka, slow down to a lower level. And I won't push it beyond this.
Jim: You are asking the question in a very difficult way. It is hard for me to answer what you are asking. If you were to say it differently, let's say that --
Ed Pearson: (Sarcastically) You ask the question.
Jim: Well, no, no, no (laughter) I'm going to try to answer your question in a different way. OK? Let's say that we are doing treadmills. OK, and you can do the treadmill at a certain rate, so many miles per hour, and you can do that relatively easy up to a certain speed, and all of a sudden after that speed you can't do that any more. OK? So let's talk about that for example. Now you train with the synchronizer, which helps in lots of ways including exercising. Now you can do a higher speed at a lower heart rate, or at a lower blood pressure. Instead of zoning out at 3 minutes and hitting your peak heart rate and it becoming dangerous, so now with the help of the Synchronizer training you can do 10 minutes at the same blood pressure and heart rate. You have made your system more efficient and it is utilizing the oxygen better. The oxygen uptake capacity has increased. OK? The analogy of the waltz and the swing, I don't think that's pertinent here. It is the capability! In other words, do you have a 30 horse power engine in your car now, or do you have a 100 horse power, or a 200 horse power engine? It doesn't mean you have to run it at 300 horse power, but having it there, you can pass a truck going up the hill. It is more of capability than the Jitterbug becoming slow. Does that help any?
Ed Pearson: Good question...
Evelynn: You are talking perception.
Ed Pearson: Exactly!
Jim: Perception! Let me just jump on that for a minute. I had a fellow who was promising to help me market my Synchronizer. And he said that he has never been able to beat his partner in tennis. He has always lost every set he has ever played. And I told him "Find a different partner, find someone that you can beat". (laughter) So anyway, he decided he would like to try this for the weekend to see if he could beat his partner. So he borrowed the synchronizer and went out and played. The next Monday he brought the synchronizer back and said "Jim, it didn't work. I'm not interested in dealing with this at all." And I said "Well, did you play your friend?" He said "yea". Well, what happened. "Oh, I beat him easily". "Well, then doesn't that mean the Synchronizer worked?" "No, I don't know. The guy was playing terrible that day, he kept giving me these slow balls and I just put them away. And every ball I hit at him, he never even went for them, I don't know what was wrong with him, he was half asleep that day." So, this person's perceptions believed that he hadn't changed, it's the rest of the world that is now going slow. I couldn't convince him that it might have been something with the Synchronizer. He would not believe it. So the perception is completely unreliable unless you have something to judge it against. If you are sitting in a bus going 50 miles per hour down the turnpike, or 600 miles an hour in an airplane, how could you tell the difference? You really can't. Unless you have some kind of signpost, or some kind of measurement.
